Tuesday Tech Tips

by Michael Krupa on September 13, 2010

Step right up for this week’s Tuesday Tech Tips.  I did a random grab of tech news from my Instapaper archive so I’m guessing I will please no one with these tips.  I joke, I joke.  Anyhoo, on with the tips.

Do you have an iPad and an iPhone or maybe 2 iPads or perhaps 4 iPhones?  If yes, then Engadget has a review of the overachieving iPADock.

I know a bunch of you tried out the new Google Voice integration in Gmail. Now the good folks over at Google have written up some handy features of Google Voice in Gmail.

Calling all iPhone or iPod Touch runners!!  There is a new Nike+ App that throws away the little Nike+ sensor and instead uses the accelerometer of your iOS device.  Whats not to like about that?

With all the Tweetups going on all over the world, you are going to need a way to keep in video touch with all your new tweeps.  Skype 5.0 Beta to the rescue with 10 way video calling.

I love me some full screen browser windows all the time.  Google took that one step further and created Fullscreen mode in Google Reader.  Life is pretty good now.

I know all you iPhone owners out there have been waiting for iOS 4.1 (especially iPhone 3G users waiting for the performance tweaks in iOS4 to make their iPhones usable again). Head on over to the TiPb blog for an iOS4 walkthrough.

I’m not sure what took so long but TiVo finally produced a remote with a built-in keyboard.  Good grief TiVo, your product lifecycles are longer than even Microsoft’s.  If you are not sure the new TiVo Slide Remote is for you, read the Engadget review here and the Zatz Not Funny review here.

The controversial new Twitter app for iPad built by Loren Brichter and his team (who developed the Tweetie app) is out.  If you have an iPad you probably already have the new Twitter app but you might want to take a peek at the TUAW Blog review anyway.

And finally (he says while trying to keep from giggling in that nerdy sort of way)…who wouldn’t want an Atom-powered PC in “an exact replica” of the original beige Commodore C64 chassis.  Christmas is just around the corner.

Tuesday Tech Tips

by Michael Krupa on July 26, 2010

No time to dilly dally around this week so I am just going to launch right into my tips!

One of areas that the Android operating system beats the iPhone is the native implementation of Google Maps.  Google continues their expansion of Maps functionality by adding a Yelp-like location based information called Places. As always, the Google Mobile blog has all the details on the new Places application.

For my Windows 7 readers, the Supersite for Windows blog has all the details on using the Reliability Monitor built into Windows 7 to help you find out what’s wrong with your computer.

Got an iPad?  The app that is all the rage this week is the Flipboard.  This free app for the iPad takes all your social networks and turns them into an attractive print style layout.  I have not yet had a chance to try out the app but Engadget has great review of Flipboard if you want to learn more.

I know many of you use Google Voice so pay attention to this great article from Lifehacker on Top 10 Clever Google Voice tricks.  No sit, stay or play dead tricks but I do like Tip #9 to set your Google Voice number as your Skype Caller ID.

Fed up with Windows but can’t make the move to an Apple device because you need all your Outlook mail to move with you?  Hold on to your socks and head over to  How-To-Geek to learn how to use the Mozilla Thunderbird email client as the go-between to convert all your Outlook email over to the Apple Mail.app email client.

Zowey. For some geek chic wristband fashion you might not want to pass up the Bluetooth Wristband Speakerphone from Atomic9.  It vibrates, it voice dials, it tells you who is calling AND if you act now it will warn you when you are too far away from your phone. As an added bonus the URL for the product is in UPPER CASE (for some strange reason).

Tuesday Tech Tips

by Michael Krupa on June 29, 2010

Hey!  It’s that day of the week again.  I’m sure you all checked your email or RSS feed this morning for your Tuesday Tech Tips, saw a big blank hole of information and wondered how you would make it through the day.  Don’t worry my little pets, I am a bit distracted this week due to a training class for our new Business Intelligence tool but I did manage to find some great tips for you for the week:

Somehow I missed this one last week but my good buddy Jason had my back.  Google Voice is now available for everyone. By the way, Jason has adorable greyhounds.

I’m sure all of you iPhone owners out there have upgraded to iOS4 by now but maybe you have been hankering for all the little tiny details about iOS4.  TUAW has the details on the iPhone user guide for iOS4.

Are you using any of the Windows Live tools such as Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Photo Gallery or Windows Live Movie Maker?  Pay attention then because Microsoft has released the Wave 4 beta (everyone do the Wave now) of Windows Live Essentials and Engadget has the details.

Let’s get back to talking about iPhones.  Not everyone ordered a brand new iPhone 4 so for those of you with an iPhone 3GS that just absolutely must have new (for iPhone 4 only) iMovie, let me present: iMovie for iPhone 3GS – there’s a hack for that.

Hot, and I do mean HOT off the presses, TUAW brings us the news of Hulu Plus announced for iPhone and iPad.

See you next week.
